Hello! The Media4Change team, the international movement for the highest standards in journalism, greet you with the same spirit which we greet the Spring, as it slowly, but relentlessly, defrosts the waters and spirits of winter. However, unlike the ice statues of winter, we here at Media4Change have not been static. We have achieved many successes and are pleased to share them with you in this newsletter.

Media4Change met and networked with other professionals at the International Journalism Festival in Perugia.
The first steps to establish the first investigative journalism agency in Central and Eastern Europe were taken.
Media4Change published new stories on communication and Human Rights.
Three participants from our Young Journalists programs published their articles in major Lithuanian media outlets.
The National Institute for Social Integration celebrated its 8th anniversary.

Tools for Investigative Journalists to manage Big Data, from the International Journalism Festival in Perugia

From discussions about the role of journalism, to lectures with world leading journalists, or workshops about new media tools, the International Journalism Festival in Perugia provided an opportunity to share best practices and inspire one another.

The conferences during the Festival inspired this article, which outlines tools journalists can use when handling large document sets during their investigations.

Media4Change completed a business plan for the Investigative Journalism Center for Eastern and Central Europe

After six months of intense work, Media4Change has completed a business plan for the creation of the first investigative journalism agency in Central and Eastern Europe, which is ready to be implemented. This was made possible thanks to Media4Change’s participation in Diversity Accelerator (Div-A), a mentoring program funded by the European Council and run by media experts. The program aims to support the development of media startups through helping them form their business plans.

Participants of our Young Journalists Program are publishing their stories in major Lithuanian media outlets

The final goal of Media4Change’s Young Journalists Progr am is the publication of their stories in Lithuanian media. So far, three of them have achieved this.

Juta Nalivaikaitė delved into the world of alcoholism and wrote a story which was published in 15Min.lt. At just 14 years old, Juta is the youngest participant of program, and was the first to have an article published in a professional media outlet.
Rugilė Kigaitė wrote an article about the reason why Lithuanian general education schools is still low for children with disabilities and she published it in DELFI.
Agata Parwicka focused on the people living in the open air encampment of Kirtimų, where 200 people live. She published her story in 15Min.lt.

Kholoud Helmi, activist who challenges Syrian regime with journalism

Media4Change introduces you to Kholoud Helmi. She is a Syrian journalist who, along with a group of citizen journalists and activists, created Enab Baladi, an underground newspaper, in 2011. This is the only publication inside Syria which reports al-Ásad abuses and crimes.

Helmi, winner of the Anna Politkovskaya Award, came to Vilnius to speak about Enab Baladi and the important role of women in preserving Syria’s local level structure, to oppose the regime and face the war. ‘When governments fall, communities will not’, she said.

Walking through history: What art can reveal about Lithuanian politics

The lives of artists Majd Kara, Ramūnas Paniulaitis and Jonas Mekas are connected by a place: Lithuania. However, as they lived in different historical times, they found very different fates here: shelter, death and exile.

Last November and December, visiting two art galleries in Vilnius, one would have been introduced to these artists’s interesting imaginary worlds. But these visits would have been also an opportunity to make an imaginary journey through 70 years of Lithuanian history. The changes in the relation among Lithuanian arts, politics and history are revealed.

Mike Jempson, covering stories from local to the global

Jempson is a journalist, university lecturer from Bristol, UK, and long term partner of Media4Change.

He came to our office and we talked about the threats and opportunities of journalism in an era of ‘fake news’. He also talked about The Bristol Cable, an innovative investigative newspaper owned and edited by Bristol’s citizens, with which he is involved.

The National Institute for Social Integration celebrated its 8th anniversary!

The National Institute for Social Integration (NISI), the organization which Media4Change belongs to, celebrated its 8th anniversary last week. NISI currently implements 5 programs. Neringa Jurčiukonytė, Director of the organization, published this album to share this inspiring journey with everyone.
